The mastermind behind this plan was none other than Craig Vandenberg, a student at Florida Southern College. On December 10, Vandenberg sought the assistance of a campus police officer, Officer Leach, to execute his elaborate scheme, as shared by the Lakeland Police Department on Facebook.
The ingenious plan unfolded as Officer Leach contacted Vandenberg's girlfriend, Emery, pretending to inform her about the discovery of a lost wallet. "I need your help," Officer Leach said, his voice filled with concern. "A police officer from downtown found Craig's wallet, and you are listed as an emergency contact for him. I have tried reaching him, and I even went to his house, but I couldn't get a hold of him. As I am about to finish my shift, I want to ensure the wallet is returned to him. Where can I meet you to give this back?"
Emery was taken aback, to say the least, by the unexpected call from a campus police officer. "Oh goodness!" she exclaimed, her curiosity piqued. Despite her surprise, Emery agreed to meet Officer Leach at a picturesque pavilion located at Lake Morton, just across campus. Meanwhile, Vandenberg, armed with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and an exquisite engagement ring, eagerly awaited his cue, ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives together.
With Vandenberg seated beside him, Officer Leach swiftly drove his patrol car towards the designated proposal site. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and excitement as the two men made their way to the pavilion, where Emery awaited, unknowingly stepping into a moment that would forever change their lives.
Emery eagerly rendezvoused with Leach, discreetly inspecting the wallet to ensure that everything remained intact. After exchanging heartfelt expressions of gratitude, Leach had an additional surprise in store for Emery. "Wait, there's more," Leach exclaimed, swinging open the rear door of his patrol car. To Emery's astonishment, Craig emerged from the vehicle. In that exhilarating instant, the two lovers shared an intimate and tender moment, unfortunately unrecorded by Leach's body-worn camera.
